Our family tree is composed primarily of Germanic lines, with additional Germanic cultural infusion via methods such as child adoption (a fresh infusion as it was only a few generations back). Our surname, Lunin, comes from the Germanic family of languages, and so well represents our combined genetic and cultural ethnicity. Specifically, our surname comes from the old Ængelseaxisc language, and in that tradition it is a habitational surname which means "[dweller in the] laund(glade)".

Coincidentally, two other cultures also independently produced Lunin names. Lunin is the Slovenian spelling of the theophoric Roman name Luna meaning "Moon". In Russia, Lunin is a patronymic surname derived from the Roman praenomen Lucius, which itself is derived from either the Latin word lux meaning "light" or the related Latin word loucus meaning "bright clearing" ("glade"!).

We've opted to add the other two meanings adjectively to slightly redefine our own Lunin surname to mean "[dweller in the] moonlit glade".

There happens to be a fourth culture which also produced a "Lunin" surname, as Lunan is also a surname of Irish/Celtic origin meaning "[descendant of] the hound", but our genealogical research so far has not uncovered any descendancy from the Irish Lunans.

We do however have enough other Celtic clans in our family tree that we can secondarily describe ourselves as Celtic anyway, which is what inspired us to refer to ourselves as Clan Lunin.

The land including the woods where our great grandfather Baisch spent his childhood has since been home to four generations of our family; we call this land "Baisch Woods" in his honor. In order to differentiate ourselves from other Lunins/Lunans, we append the locality specifier "of Baisch Woods" to our name when such differentiation is useful.
